Adventure - Autonomy in Santa Maria 80km 5 days

Santa Maria is the perfect island for those who like tranquility, nature and adventure!

What we propose is a full crossing of the island, passing through its most iconic points. It is an autonomous guided trip for 5 days and 4 nights, at a leisurely pace with some challenging points.

The overnight shelters are old haystacks reconstructed using traditional methods and ecological materials. As ecological shelters, energy is renewable and water is reused. For this reason, you should carry soap or ecological gel with you.

We propose a half-board option with an excellent dinner of homemade food, based on local ingredients. Every day meals are prepared and delivered before our arrival in a traditional pan. The brekfast it's Continental style. Wine is available in the houses at an additional cost, teas and coffee included.

Program

Sunday, April 2nd:

Arrival at Santa Maria Island.

Transport to the Youth Hostel in the center of Vila do Porto and next to the beginning of the trail.

Free afternoon to visit Vila do Porto.

Group dinner  in a typical bar for socializing and presentation of the activity.

Overnight at the Youth Hostel in shared dormitories. 

(Possibility to leave a suitcase at the Inn)

From Monday, April 3 to Friday, April 7:

Autonomous island crossin

5 stages, total of 80 km

4 nights of accommodation in ecological shelters, with breakfast and homemade dinner (vegetarian option available).

Monday, April 3:

Briefing with the owners of the refuge houses on how they operate and the rules of use.

Warm up with a stop at Praia de Formosa, a white sand beach.

Vila do Porto - Malbusca 10km

Tuesday, April 4:

Lapa - North 18km

North-east coast with great views and some challenging points

Wednesday, April 5:

Lapa - North 18km

North-east coast with great views and some challenging points

Thrusday, April 6:

North - Baía do Raposo 20km

We will enter the interior of the island and climb Pico Alto, the highest point on the island.

Friday, April 7:

Last stage of the crossing, northwest coast with different landscape

Baía do Raposo - Vila do Porto 22 km

Return flight late afternoon / night

Option of spending an extra night at the Youth Hostel (not included)
