The Miller Route

Interests: Nature, Fauna, Flora, Etnography, Geology, Heritage

Our walk begins at the Largo dos Chorões Square in Monchique. We will start by going through the town centre and stopping at the Igreja Matriz (Main Church). Then we will head out on to the country roads until we reach an area of forest with chestnut, cork oak and eucalyptus trees. Next, we will go down to Barranco dos Pisões, which is crossed by the Seixe Stream. There, we will visit the restored Água do Poucochinho water mill. We can see a massive plane tree and a wide variety of riverine vegetation. Thereafter we begin to head uphill, passing Barranco do Carvalho and a grove of massive holly trees. On the way back down to the town, we pass by the ruins of the Convent of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, framed by a beautiful wood of cork oaks. In the streets of the town of Monchique, we can admire the traditional architecture, the fountains, the community water tanks, and massive araucaria and magnolia trees.

At the end of the walk we continue to Caldas de Monchique where you can enjoy a meal in the tapas and wine bar "Tasco" and a relaxing thermal circuit in Caldas de Monchique thermal spa.
