Medronho Experience

This experience takes place in Serra de Monchique, where the production of "aguardente de medronho" is an old tradition that has passed from generation to generation.
This appreciated drink is produced with the colorful fruits of the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), shrub or tree present in the Mediterranean scrub.
The process is divided into three phases: the harvest (October-December), the fermentation (December - March / April) and the distillation (March / April).

We invite to come to learn and participate in this process with a local producer whose family has been producing this drink for several generations.
This experience is realized in autumn in the time of the harvest of the arbutus and in the spring at the time of the distillation.

Medronho Harvesting

The picking of the arbutus begins in the autumn when the fruit begins to turn a red-orange color, a sign that it is ripe. The rains in late September and early October herald a good harvest. This work starts very early and is done in groups of family, friends and neighbors who come together. The berries are picked one by one, without branches and without leaves. It is important to choose only those that are ripe, as it will determine the final result, whether or not the beverage has that such appreciated softness.
In this experience, we will accompany the producer to the "medronhal" and harvest the fruits for the production of the firewater. At the end there will be a tasting of "medronho" and "melosa" in the distillery and "bolo do tacho", a typical cake of the region.
